Islam, Cultural Awareness & Tolerance

 

Having worked and traveled to several Islamic schools in various locales across the country, there is a wide range in levels of awareness of Islam and the diverse cultures of Muslim people. Some regions are culturally more sensitive than others, and many folks simply have never met a Muslim before.

 

Presentations to schools and municipalities on Islam that lay people can relate to have been able to bridge the gap. Simply being availabie to answer questions from people who are merely curious has helped humanize the "other" and offered a new perspective.

 

Having a voice for Muslims is important. Genius School has provided open forums and brief presentations to public school teachers and principals who are finding an increase in Muslim student populations, but they have not felt comfortable speaking frankly to their students or parents for fear of causing offense.
